I have three children - ages 6, 4 and 2. I will be reviewing this movie from their perspective, not that of an adults. They really enjoyed the movie. Since they are not professional cartoonist, they did not care about the quality of the drawings. If anything, the ‘old style’ cartoon movie (similar to the first Peter Pan) kept the feel of the first movie. If they had musty too many computer graphics, it would not have flowed well from the first movie. My children also liked the record. It was intelligent, but not scary - even for the youngest. Each of the characters was reasonably developed, although Jane is the focus of the movie. She is Wendy’s daughter, and Peter gets a supporting role in the set. Hook is help and is mean without being homely. Even the octopus, Hook’s tormentor, is delicate tame. As for the quality of the music, my kids liked it and even asked for the soundtrack. (It is OK, but mostly instrumental takes from the movie. There are three noble songs on it though…) Finally, some reviewers have critiqued the voices and complained they are not steady matches for the first Peter Pan. If you know him personally, then you might have a complaint. You have also grown-up procedure too distinguished to ever indulge in this movie. (Go watch the Exorcist or something!) Unless you have gone to bed every night since the 50’s listening to Peter, you will not discover anything different on the voices. From a child’s perspective, you won’t be thinking of such things anyway. The legend deals with typical Neverland topics: growing up, the pressures of being a kid, and the battle between carefree youth and grumpy people. By the design, this is all done without making adults or parents out to be the abominable guys. The scurry of the movie is colossal, keeping the kid’s interest and being long enough to recall them on a meaningful adventure without exhausting their attention span.

The best piece of the movie is the demolish when Peter takes the kids home and is reunited with Wendy. It is a large scene and one that brings help memories of the first movie’s magic to both young and conventional. I know my kids loved it. I belief this movie did not strike me as a lot of Disney movies do these days - shallow, trashy and money driven. This is a 1950’s style Disney film, not the crud they also release these days with cussing, tiring, adults and not too subtle adult themes.

My kids idea this movie was enormous and a true neat myth. Like a kid’s movie through their eyes, not an adult’s, and you will elope to Neverland with your children enjoying the toddle along the diagram!

There have been numerous Peter Pan movies, several of which rob station AFTER the fresh sage (”Hook” being the best rendition so far) . However, Disney, with it’s Disclose to video roll, for some unique reason, decided to assign this one on the spacious hide!

As an animator myself i can honestly say that this is far below disney’s usual standard. The animaton is stiff and akward. The voices of the characters are not even remotely cessation to the novel (especially the lost boys) and Peter Pan himself comes across as nothing more than a brat without his charm that has made him such a beloved icon.

Disney is also ‘getting with the times’ and instead of confrunting and trying to debunk the dismal stereotyped “injuns,” the indian camp looks more like they were wiped out and aren’t even mentioned in the movie, fair to be kindly.

As for the memoir, it had a lot going for it. The material was all there, it’s impartial a shame the writers honest took whatever came by first. Jane is non-empathetic, and her transition from wanting to grow up to being a kid is very downplayed.

This film is great more lighter than the unusual Peter Pan which was rather unlit in places. The worse that happens in this is Peter Pan is thrown 5 feet to the deck of a ship. ow.

I must give them credit though for the ending. Peter and Wendy’s reuniting was something i idea they wouldn’t even bother with because it was too dissapointing, but they were somehow able to place a light lumber on it. favorable job disney! at least you’re not completely out of ideas yet!

Granted kids will bask in it for there is enough potty humor to maintain them entertained, but parents might suffer seeing their beloved childhood memories dashed into bits.

I first watched this movie on HBO, after viewing it with my wife we decided to rent it so our children could perceive what realy happened in Rosewood and learn about history, we are a white family and I feel it is necessary for my children to learn what realy happened there. After watching the movie we took a stir to the area that was once Rosewood, the only remaining structure is mr. Wrights house, the town is gone, we walked through the set that was once Rosewood and tried to imagine it as it was in the movie, we then went to Sumner and saw the state that was once the mill,we found some relics there, along with some buildings that had housed the residents of Sumner who worked in the mill, we then visited Mr. Wrights grave in Sumner, all in all the movie was mammoth as it taught my family and myself about the history of the town and how imperfect racism was aid then.

It could be argued that some of the shadowy characters are far from above reproach. Esther Rolle’s decision not to characterize the incident, Ving Rhames’ (and others) desire to initially accelerate from the conflict, or you could observe at the promiscuity of Don Cheadle’s sister’s character who has an adulterous affair with Jon Voight. Superficially these may appear to be character flaws. That is unless you tale for the reality of pervasive racism that exists in America (forget about unprejudiced the South) by both the general populous and public officials in particular. The harsh truth is that dim people didn’t have the luxury to be (considerable) less than virtuous as it could too often result in imprisonment, financial raze, beatings or lynchings. And even with all of the so called virtue exhibited by the sunless characters an accusation by a white woman was approved even in lieu of truths known by other white characters. If that could happen to characters who were above reproach I abominate to imagine what would have happened to less virtuous characters. If they were virtuous it’s only because their very survival depended on it. This theme has repeated itself all too often and all too recently for a thinking individual to maintain that these types of incidents couldn’t happen today.

The most depraved fact is how long it took for the government to even retort the alarm and injustice of this and other events such as the destruction of Sad Wall Street in Kansas City. That is another element of why blacks so often had to conduct themselves in a seemingly reproachless manner.

And Mr. Singleton need not be criticized for the ’stereotypical’ portrayals of southern racists. It was and is suitable. Unbiased as it’s suitable to exhibit that there were and are whites who were shapely minded and exhibited expansive bravery of their bear record.

There is nothing ‘happy’ about this movie at all. Glance at the countless number of lives that were either ruined or ended because of our collective disease. The final conflict underscores the valid tragedy that racism is. It destroys the lives and humanity of all it’s participant’s be they perpetrators or victims. How many children lost their parents? How many individuals lost their livelihood or savings? How many families were destroyed?

That notwithstanding it is a monumental achievment for Mr. Singleton if not necessarily a cinematic masterpiece. But who ever said that history has to be exiciting or uplifting? It’s objective what is. For that Mr. Singleton deserves the highest commendation unprejudiced to score a film of this nature made let alone telling a too often suppressed and ignored piece of our history. For that I give it 5 stars. However, there are many nuances to the film which I personally only recognized after multiple viewings. It’s an experience that should be viewed, discussed and reflected upon. That’s certainly something I can’t say about mighty of what’s coming out of Hollywood today.

What I wonder about is how many sincere Rosewood’s have occured that have never been recorded or recognized.

George’s best friend & co-worker is the sweet, paralyzed, loveless, Ernesto Cardenas{Valente Rodriguez} Now for the other main character, one truly can’t recount George’s verbally cruel mom Benita Lopez-Benny{played brilliantly by Belita Moreno}. She is a gross between Godzilla & Roseanne{Roseanne Barr}, without the softness. She works with George, chain smokes, & drinks.

This is a blue-collar Hispanic version of the “Cosby Display” with more laughs. Typically, episodes that involve her are the most hilarious. She can trip into a room{George recede your large Pumpkin head out of the draw, your blocking the TV!}, offend everyone in 30 seconds, & then leave for a “smoke & a beer.” George’s wounds from his fatherless childhood & neglectful mother are at the heart of the point to as he & Benny rehash every battle as they plot all into their mini Armageddons. The first two seasons were not the best, but this point to got better every season. Lastly, Sandra Bullock deserves credit for getting this prove on TV.

The George Lopez exhibit is twenty first century family entertainment at its best. He is the Captain of the house, as long as you do not order his Cubain born wife Angie. His kids respect him-NOT and his mother Benny…well lets say, she wont gain mother of the year anytime soon

Lopez is fraction in the vein of Desi Arnaz and Fraction in the vein of Chico (Freddie Prinze SR) of Chico & the Man. He is also the first silly to survive in TV as a latino, since Chico and the man. is, that would be a staunch spoiler. However the last 5 minutes (HINT) will be well KROFTED (impress not mispelled) for the kid in all of us.

the second of my two episodes involves accident Amy (played by executive producer Sandra Bullock) . She seems to have so mighty fun pratfalling and ending up in mishap after mishap, while George tries for a 30 day accident free shop.

So if you want family fun with a target on fun. This hits the bullseye on all accounts

“The Jacksons - An American Dream” was very delicious to peep, although those of us who grew up with the Jackson 5 know that there was a LOT left out and several inaccuracies in the script. But perhaps the things that were hinted at or weren’t mentioned at all in the movie is what made the biggest impression. It isn’t essential to acquire into all of the scenarios that were missed, but I will say this movie did well to give you a very general opinion of objective what Michael, Marlon, Jermaine, Tito, Jackie, and later on, Randy Jackson went through on the road to fame and during the height of their popularity. IMO, the reason Papa Joe Jackson (played excellently by Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs) worked his kids so hard is because he himself was an unsuccessful musician, and wanted a better future for them. Now I absolutely do not condone the harsh methods he stale to discipline his children - but I do understand it.

Now on to the movie…The beginning, which concentates on the life of the young Katherine growing up in Chicago, drags a bit. But it’s after the kids are born when the fable starts to obtain titillating. Angela Bassett is effective in her role as the family matriarch, Katherine Jackson, but I’ve seen Angela in mighty stronger roles and being cast as the long-suffering wife of Joe Jackson didn’t really suit her. But given the material she had to work with, she did a pretty job.

The rest of the cast was alright - worth noting are Billy Dee Williams as Motown founder Berry Gordy; Vanessa L. Williams as Berry’s protege Suzanne dePasse; Bumper Robinson and Terence Howard, who both played oldest brother Jackie but at different ages; and the son of the trusty Jermaine Jackson, Jermaine II, playing his father as a teenager - however, who had the horrendous view of casting Holly Robinson as Diana Ross?! Ugh. She was totally unconvincing and almost funny. The kids, who were mostly unknowns, were pleasing distinguished on point, especially the talented Jason Weaver as the pre-teen Michael (he gives a dead-on performance in this role) ; the slow Wylie Draper, who played the adult Michael; and the actor who portrayed the adult Jermaine, Colin Steele. Their performances were among the best in the film.

I would like to address a couple of remarks that some previous reviewers brought up: WHEN was it implied that Joe Jackson was having an affair with Suzanne dePasse? That must be something I missed, because nothing like that was ever even hinted at. Joe did have a mistress, but it was NOT Ms. dePasse. Also, this was supposed to be the record of the Jackson 5, NOT Janet or Latoya Jackson, so this is why they were barely mentioned…and that qualified me unbiased delicate. Overall, this is a friendly film to sit support and devour on a Sunday afternoon, although there were parts that were a bit corny, like the constant mention of getting to California being the measure of success in Joe and Katherine’s eyes. But Jackson fans are positive to fancy it and will definitely want to develop it portion of their collection.

This movie…. is the movie for all ages. My kids like it. When I first saw this movie I fell in care for with it. I had tape both parts had it for years, then it got lost. I took it over to someon’s house and they could never pick up it. I’ve always tried to tape it again but never had the opportunity to do so. Evey character is this movie was casted well. I was not disappointed at no time. This movie is a classic, and all Murky Americans should have this movie in their homes. I would like to salvage my hand on the video for occupy, but every-where I go says that it’s not availible. Why?, I do not know. This movie should be in high interrogate. Why doesn’t the publisher compose more availible to us. Why is it that this particular video is hard to find a believe of? If anyone out there, publisher, someone that has knowledge to how I could gather a beget to this video, please let me know. I would really luxuriate in it. I’ve been looking off and on for about 3years, so if you know anything please e-mail me with the information.

Well.. the movies are not awesome, some cheesy slay of the world movies (Hallmark type) but you can devour watching them…

I esteem both 10.5 movies, as well as both of the Category 7 ones. Both movies on one blu-ray is a lot better than the standard dvd spot. They effect out both of these sequels as well as 10.5 Apocalypse by it’s self. I hope that they eventually do both of the first movies on a blu-ray like they did with this position…..as long as the first 10.5 has the commentary like the standard dvd did.

Reviewing the movie: I’m not a Jim Carrey fan, i’m really far from them (i mediate his acting in other movies is… well, dull), besides, this movie is one of my favorites, and nobody could picture a better Cover character than Carrey.

This movie is not only a feast of special effects (by the ILM guys, inspired in the cartoon antics of Tex Avery), musical numbers, and laughs; this movie also has a message in it — “From Zero to Hero”.

Yeah! i know that this is portion of the main title of the DVD (in theatres, it hasn’t this title), somebody could assume that Zero is refering to Stanley Ipkiss, and Hero is the Cloak, but this title is NOT refering to the Stanley Ipkiss’ Hide character, it’s refering to Stanley Ipkiss himself! The Screen character is far from being a Hero, it’s really a headache to Ipkiss and the society in general, but when Ipkiss realizes that he doesn’t need the conceal and began to confront his inner fears (and “the dreadful guys”) without the camouflage succor, that’s when Ipkiss become a Hero… in the staunch life, somehow that’s something that we can conclude when we close “wearing our masks” and start to act like ourselves, showing to the other who really are we.

Reviewing the DVD: The audio and video quality are superb (the sound is Dolby Surround 5.1 and the video is remastered) ; this is a double sided disc, in one side you accept the Rotund Conceal version of the film, in the other the Widescreen version (something celebrated in “extinct” dvd’s), in the extras side, you can glimpse 2 deleted scenes (but without commentary..), an audio commentary by Chuck Russell (here you can learn why those 2 scenes where eliminated… unfortunatelly the audio comentary doesn’t have any subtitles, so, if you’re not an English speaker, probably you’ll have a spot) ; audio in english and french, subtitles in spanish, french and english; the theatrical trailer…. the box says that the dvd has Production notes, but i can’t rep none.

This is a apt movie, and it doesn’t matter if you’re not a Carrey fan (like myself)

Did you know that this well-behaved comedy was planed to be a awe?! Based on accepted silly, THE Hide would be a storu about green killer who tells sarcastic remarks, while he’s tearing a piece his victims with an axe. But, when director Chuck Russell got Jim Carrey for this role he decided to do a comedy. And lucky for him and us he did a stout job. I remember when I saw THE Cover for the first time. Wonderful account, moving characters, and of course, Jim Carrey in role which made him celebrated. Narrative is about unsuccessful, skittish banker who comes in possesion of an stale wooden camouflage which turnes him into a wild, green, party creature who now has everything: powers, money and treasure. It influented on me so remarkable that I accept the same dog like Milo (that is one damn bright dog!) . Carry gave the best of himself: he danced, sang and made jokes all the time. Cameron Diaz left me breathless, and two caps…, well, peep it for yourself. This film guaranties fun whole 90 minutes it lasts and trust me, you will worship it.

Finally we pick up out the suitable overall connection between Gram and Vestimona! No flashback, but its enormous to finally hear their total backstory and what a fight during the explanation! I was proper frightened that we would never rep a splendid explanation of their past, and then to top it off they give us a kiss…nice! Not nice…Vestimonas decision to “sure things up” instead of going with Gram. Hopefully it will gain the ending better with another reunion. Although their has been a lot of heart in all the previous volumes, Volume 5 by far pulled the strings the tightest, leading us into the final volume. Will Yagami be aid in the final volume? I definite hope so. His departure was outlandish to me in the whole plan of things and that unusual bit of writing was the only reason I didnt give this volume 5 stars. I believe he will arrive support but if he doesnt, then I assume it would have been better if he had given his life for the crew as the decoy. At least he would have gone out with a bang and a plot fitting to his backround as a old soldier. Anyway, these things considered along with the mountainous action and fun, had me really liking this volume. Im not positive how this series is going to slay, but it determined had a nice head of steam charging into the final volume.

A Unbelievable film showing how an artist- in this case Picasso- takes a blank sheet of paper or canvas and transforms it into a work of art. Thru a special process that lets the inks bleed thru to the scandalous side of the canvas where a camera captures the developement of a drawing from the first placement of a brush stroke to the final completed drawing/painting. Sometimes it is truly improbable to scrutinize what comes forth from the humble beginnings. We also are able to follow the developement of paintings as well with the aide of close motion photography. I wish I were an art teacher so I could fraction this with my students! An exquisite film for anyone with an interest in art!

This film is a precise treat, as gives us an insight into the work of Picasso by literally allowing us to gaze the master at work and how his simple brush strokes incredibly evolve into masterpieces, in some instances even metamorphosing before our eyes from a figurative allotment in to a cubist expression of the same. This is a film that I was pleasantly surprised to behold my 5-year-old son sit through shearing my amazement as Picasso worked for the camera. It’s a determined “must have” for those that like Picasso and who, after viewing this movie, will delight in his work even more!

After four volumes of sneaking and one-on-one fights, the battle against the Bounts has finally started up… at least for the moment. “Bleach Volume 19″ unveils some racy backstory for the treacherous Soul Reaper and some rather determined location twists (wow, didn’t leer THAT rebellion coming!), as well as a view of the Bounts’ leader Jin Kariya’s Machievellian personality. It feels like a warm-up.

While Rukia and the modsouls go hunting for Uryu, Ichigo stays slow to fight a very execrable match with Udogawa and his snake doll Frida. But before the fight is over, Udogawa suddenly turns on Jin Kariya with a dirty trick, intending to become the Bounts’ unusual leader — and Ichigo is unnerved by the arrival of a traitorous Soul Reaper with a light-deflecting zanpakuto, Maki Ichinose.

Cue flashback: Ichinose was devastated when Zaraki defeated and killed his captain, and became captain of Squad Eleven instead. Wandering the world away from the Soul Society in disgust, Ichinose found a original leader to obsess on and idolize when he met Jin Kariya.

After the destruction of the mansion, the gang gathers at Urahara’s to recover: Yoruichi fills them in on current findings about the Quincy and the Bounts from the Soul Society, and Ichigo starts freaking out over Kariya’s devastating strength. While Ganju and Renji try to snap Ichigo out of his funk, Yoshino escapes and goes relieve to Kariya, positive to slay his plans — only to explore that the Bount leader has a long-term idea that involves her.

“Bleach Volume 19″ does a dazzling solid job of mingling action and exposition. While there’s plenty of sword-fighting and some absorbing foreshadowing (what’s up with the grandfather clock? ), the scriptwriters focus a lot on answering some questions — the downsides of the Bounts’ endless lives, Maki Ichinose’s bizarre loyalty to Kariya, and a rather horrible twist at the slay about Kariya’s plans for Yoshino.

Along the arrangement, there’s some rather humorous sword fights (dread the rainbow sword!), explosions of overfanged snakes, and a climactic duel between Kariya and Yoshino in a charred waste. But after the race from the Bount mansion, the chronicle slows down and becomes more comedic for awhile, both in the dialogue (”Why were you riding that boar? … WHERE on Earth did you score it?!”) and action (Kon’s microscopic dip in a warm bath — “my squeaker is getting squashed!”) . In fact, it gets TOO unimaginative and TOO comedic sometimes.

Aside from all the information about Bounts, we also eye what the deal is with Maki Ichinose — and frankly gleaming more about him makes him even less likable. He turns out to be a born follower (Zaraki contemptuously compares him to an “ivy vine” who can’t stand on his enjoy) who blindly worships anyone whom he follows. And he can’t cope with the harsh reality that Zaraki was well within his rights, and that his tedious captain has only himself to blame for being killed — he popular, after all.

And there’s a distinctly bittersweet edge to Yoshino’s battle against Kariya, since it seems that there’s no device she can fetch (and Goethe becomes powerful more like a person — “then we’re going to die together? “) . Unfortunately Ichigo’s blink-and-you’ll-miss-it funk seems like an excuse to eat time, rather than any steady worries about whether he’ll lose against Kariya.

“Bleach Volume 19″ lays out some novel exposition on the Bounts and their pet Soul Reaper, mingled with a healthy dose of action and comedy. Worth watching, though it has some obvious flaws — especially since there are obviously substantial developments in the works.

There are three fun and pleasurable episodes in this movie(duh!) .

“The Superhero Secret” is the first episode. This episode is about a superhero called Gligarman and the store manager of the Gligarman store shows Ash, Misty and Brock the history of Gligarman. Then the store manager tells Ash, Misty and Brock that he is Gligarman! He has a pokemon called Gligar the Scorpio pokemon! Then Team Rocket comes and has a Machine built Spinarak!

“Aloof and Wooly” is about a valley girl and a mom who has a lot of Mareep. There is a baby Mareep in this account. Then Team Rocket comes and wants to grasp the Mareep but Ash and Friends employ a mainframe to power up the baby Mareep and the Mareep uses Thundershock and blasts Team Rocket!

And “Wired For Battle” is the last episode which is about a boy named Shingo who has a Scizor which is the evolved accomplish of Scyther but cooler looking. Shingo is so crooked into his laptop and cares about the pokemon’s stats instead of their feelings. Shingo’s teacher at the dojo tells Ash and co. about Shingo. Ash desides to battle Shingo in a match. Ash beats Shingo with Heracross and that shows Shingo that laptops aren’t perfect in battle and that he should contemplate his pokemon’s feelings.

“The Superhero Secret” Ash and his friends plunge into a trap station by Team Rocket, causing Togepi to be in distress. Luckily for them, Togepi is saved by a superhero who called himself Gligar and his pokemon, a gligar. Later Ash and co. get out who he is and settles an argument between father and daughter.

“Unruffled ‘n Wooly” Ash and friends meet a young girl with a mareep called Fluffy. Along with her mother, who happened to maintain a raichu, they foil another one of Team Rocket’s plans to prefer all the mareep that they bear.

“Wired for Battle” Ash and friends meet Mr. Morramasa, who owns a Scizor, and runs a training school for pokemon trainers and their pokemon. Ash challenges Shingo, Mr. Morramasa’s top student, who thinks that his computer is more famous than pokemon. Ash beats him with his heracross, and Shingo realizes that his computer isn’t everything.
This is my popular episode on this DVD, probably because Ash and Shingo has a very long pokemon battle.

If like a lot of people you first saw “Mickey & the Beanstalk” not in theaters but on television (usually preceding a feature, like “Dumbo”) you are in for a bit of a surprise.

This DVD contains the theatrical version, where the animation is interspersed with live-action footage of people at a party, who are “telling” the myth. This also means the wonderfully soothing TV-version narration (provided by Superior Halloway, also roar of Pooh) is gone. The destroy result is that the cartoon drags on unnecessarily as the action is constantly interrupted by the live-action segments. Additionally, the live actors tend to secure a bit chatty with their narration, and some of the humor they try to inject hasn’t ragged well. With the capacity of the DVD medium, why couldn’t the TV version be tacked on as an extra?

Still worth owning (the stunning animation and music can’t be derailed even by the mediocre live action footage) –but be warned.

Okay, I have been reading the other reviews on this movie, and they all say things like “went on for too long”…”Blueprint overhyped”…and things like that. I beg to differ. The two movies in this astounding DVD, Bongo and Mickey and the Beanstalk, are two family classics. As a child, I watched these two movies (on VHS, of course) over and over and over again. Willy the Giant characterizes my childhood in three words…”Potroast! Chocolate potroast!” And now, I know for a fact that my two itsy-bitsy brothers have memorized the whole movie of Mickey and the Beanstalk. I don’t want to ramble on forever, but I unprejudiced want to say that these two are the best movies that I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of movies.

Finally–the big Errol Flynn is becoming available on DVD. One can only hope that Warner Bros. will be releasing more classic Flynn titles in the approach future. Except for gradual in his career, when Errol’s excessive lifestyle took its toll, we are looking at one of the most spellbinding stars to ever grace the “silver conceal”.

As other reviews will affirm you, this is a truly memorable World War II drama about American soldiers successfully accomplishing a hazardous mission against the Japanese in the jungles of Burma, only to face the daunting task of returning to home detestable alive. The film is captivating, touching, unlit and uplifting–and if ever there was an actor that men might follow even through the gates of hell, it is Errol Flynn. I agree that this is one of his best performances. At first, we score the celebrated Flynn bravado, but as the record progresses, we observe more desperate human qualities and ultimately a world-weary resignation. The scene where he discovers that one of his men has been tortured to death does not really prove the victim–it doesn’t have to–the fright and disbelief on Flynn’s face says it all.

The film is long–but even when there is no action taking state, the combination of suspense and sharply-drawn characters keeps a firm grip on your attention. You can feel that oppressive heat–the dense jungle–the biting insects–and the constant threat of a ruthless enemy. In many ways the atmosphere foreshadows another outrageous war for Americans, in another Asian jungle, some twenty years later.

The DVD is excellent–the characterize is very sure and stable for a 58-year conventional film.

I know that this movie was vilified in the UK for ignoring the immense role played by British troops in this theatre of the war. I don’t pass historical judgments–I simply review the film. As such, “Honest Burma” is a noteworthy statement, and an valid vehicle for a truly tremendous star.

Raoul Walsh directed this gruelling, gritty, compelling war tale, produced during World War Two, as the fight in the Pacific was collected in stout swing. Errol Flynn, in one of his least glamorous roles, stars as a hard-bitten Captain in charge of an American paratrooper unit that gets sent on a commando mission into Japanese-occupied Burma. They easily effect their goal of destroying a strategic radar post, but are decimated while trying to return from enemy territory. The film is remorselessly well paced, tense, and manages to transcend the conventions of Hollywood’s WWII combat melodramas: it is propagandistic and uses distinct formulas, but it is also earthy and anxiety-provoking in a contrivance that the grade-B war films of the era were not. The problem of the soldiers — stranded unhurried enemy lines and sever off from their assist — is made visceral in a intention which few movies manage to insist, making this film a sure precursor to “Platoon” and “Shaded Hawk Down.” It’s bleak tone and realistic portrayal of the foot soldiers, with their shaded humor and fatalistic choose, all rings moral. First, I have to stamp that most of these reviews are for the somewhat disappointing Criterion Edition released in 1999. The version I’ll be reviewing is the powerful improved Divimax (high definition digital transfer) from Anchor Bay. The two DVD edition of Time Bandits from Anchor Bay has isn’t perfect but it’s a stark improvement on the previous no frills version they issued in 1999 and the Criterion Edition from the same time frame.

The high definition transfer and the fact that the film has been enhanced for 16×9 televisions are definitive improvements on the previous edition. The record is sharper although I did impress some minor edge enhancement and digital compression issues. On the whole, though, the represent looks helpful. The first disc features only the film and it doesn’t have the ample audio commentary compilation by Gilliam, Michael Palin, David Warner, John Cleese and Craig Warnock. That’s a pity because that would have made this the ultimate edition of the film.

Now the major complaint from some folks regarding the image size. Gilliam shot Time Bandits to be shown theatrically in a 1.85:1 ratio. Time Bandits was probably shot stout mask (like Kubrick’s films so that they wouldn’t be badly “cropped” when released) . More than likely Gilliam matted the image AFTER the film was shot. The widescreen image IS the procedure Gilliam intended the film to be seen) .

The worst looking DVD was the one attach out by the highly regarded Criterion Company. It featured interlace problems, an unstable portray (perhaps due to a flaw during the telecine transfer) and sound that sound left powerful to be desired. The aspect ratio (the dimension of the width and heighth of the film on hide) is fair here and the beautifully detailed transfer is so spicy that, on occasion, you can even view the limitations (there’s a hint of wires in some scenes) of Terry Gilliam’s optical effects.

The soundtrack has been remixed for the Dolby Digital EX track although I noteworthy preferred the more natural sounding 5.1 mix. Since the current source material was designed for stereo and there were some recording limitations at the time the film was made, the tinny sound is serene a bit of a pickle. That’s not a plight that can be easily solved unfortunately. Tranquil, Anchor Bay does the best they can with the materials at hand.

The second disc contains all the extras. The feaurettes include the obedient The Directors: The films of Terry Gilliam with interviews featuring Gilliam, Shelly Duvall, Brad Pitt, Amanda Plummer, Mercedes Ruehl, Madeleine Stowe and David Warner. There’s also an interview with Gilliam and Palin as well as the current theatrical trailers for the film. Some of these features duplicate comments heard on the commentary track for the film from Criterion.

There’s also a Terry Gilliam bio and, most importantly, a DVD-Rom version of the fresh screenplay. Both these features are no where else to be found. Anchor Bay includes a fold out Design of the Universe which also has a background on the film production.

As one would put a question to of a Criterion release, the DVD of “Time Bandits” is an absolute pleasure, from the neat film transfer to the many toothsome added features.

The production scrapbook is a adore, along with the commentary by Gilliam and Palin. These features truly enrich one’s appreciation for the film; not only do they lavish praise on the actors playing the “dwarves” (who, in retrospect, did nothing less than a bold job), but also order many of the clever tricks that allowed them to originate such a sumptuously magnificent film for the cost of Speilberg’s monthly catering bill. Compare this film to expensive clunkers like “Tron” (which came out a year later!) to luxuriate in the extent of Gilliam’s craft. Cleese’s description of his day’s work is howlingly amusing, and David Warner is helpful and wryly funny. The now-grown Craig Warnock is not particularly eloquent, however, and it’s hard to assure if he’s joking about the film scarring him psychologically!

The trailer is simply unpleasant, after a promising commence, but it’s indicative of AVCO’s cluelessness about how to market such a current and novel film. They tried to pass it off as Python style comedy, wonderful for kiddies and fun for grow-ups. In fact, it’s nothing of the kind - it’s a perilous and rigorous film that one may wish to support out of the hands of cramped children.

Despite it’s vague resemblance to “The Wizard of Oz” told upside down (or inside out? ), “Time Bandits” is not a typical (original) children’s film. It has an mature Grimm-ness, with creatures dying irascible, sweaty deaths and even “obedient” characters behaving quite badly at times. In short, it is more utterly just than any fantasy film made since Disney bowdlerized “Snow White.”

Understanding that young people like to be troubled, and taking outlandish delight in how “bad” his band of dwarf thieves are, Gilliam places a very loyal boy (so exact, he’s almost monotonous) in an wonderful series of situations, exposing him to abominable ordeals with only a shifty gang of unreliable and occasionally listless companions to guide and protect him - though mostly they ignore him or egg him on to be more like them (being dwarves, he towers over them, both physically and morally) . At the very moment he feels he’s found the just station to be, they sail him away with no regard for his wishes or feelings, and ultimately thrust him into conflict with forces neither he nor they can comprehend, let alone master.

Sounds a bit like growing up, doesn’t it?

Along the diagram, Gilliam tweaks various legendary Broad and Considerable Figures (Napoleon, Agamemnon, Robin Hood - even Satan [referred to exclusively as "The Inferior Genius"]), not to mention technology and consumerism, to instruct the narrow-minded, clumsy, grasping people we grown-ups really are.

The ending remains controversial, although I can remember seeing it in my tedious teens and feeling utterly liberated by it (what teenage boy doesn’t want his parents to evaporate, at least once in a while? ) . There’s more honesty and meaning in the last five minutes than any patently erroneous “ecstatic ending” could hope to effect, although young children conditioned to inquire Pocahontas to live happily ever after with John Smith (which, of course, she didn’t) may collect it too disturbing.

“Time Bandits” is a triumphant spend of fantasy to notify truth, of the power of the imagination to rep the reality hidden in dead scrutinize (the figures in the final conflict can all be found in the boy’s room in the early scenes) . It’s an unforgettable film, with images and characters that will finish with you for a lifetime, even if you aren’t an impressionable, disaffected, precocious brat (like I was when I first saw it), but especially if you are!

This was a very warm and engrossing movie! It shows how one person with a lot of determination can develop a incompatibility. Before seeing the movie I had no plan of how the protection for the Spirit Gain came about or how this young boy was able to turn his fight for an animal he loved into a worldwide organization to relieve keep our precious wild animals and their habitat. I was left feeling very uplifted with the knowledge that there are so many out there who care about preserving our planet and her wildlife. If you are an animal and earth lover, you will really relish this film. I view the acting was a miniature archaic and phony, but the exquisite scenery and the message it brings across makes up for it.

This is a anecdote of a boy who would not give up.

I was so moved by this film that,as a teacher, I wanted to portion it with my students, and wait on them to mediate about the environment and that we do indeed piece this planet with other creatures.

That Simon could, as a boy, change the draw a goverment thinks must be a grand lesson to us all. I know it is an weak cliche, but one person can really gain a contrast.
